Underground Storage Tank Removal and Closure, San Francisco

Multiple construction projects were underway by SFPW.  During the construction of those projects, unknown underground storage tanks were found and required immediate removal without significant impact to the construction schedules and costs.  AEW was retained to provide permitting and removal engineering support services on the UST removal and closure at the following City and County San Francisco’s construction sites: (1) North Beach Library site; (2) Cesar Chavez sewer improvement project alignments; (3) Central Shop site at Jerrold Avenue; and (4) North Shore sewer improvement project. AEW conducted the following activities to assist on removing USTs:

  • UST Removal Permitting
  • Coordination with regulatory agencies for field removal
  • Documentation of the field removal
  • Confirmation sampling and analyses
  • UST closure report

Project Challenges

These UST removal activities were conducted when unexpected USTs were found during the construction of these projects.  Therefore, timely removals of these USTs were required to minimize impacts to the construction schedules and costs while complying with the necessary regulatory requirements on the removal.  Because of our extensive experience in UST removal and our strong working relationship with the SFDPH and SFFD, AEW understood the information required for the permit applications and maintained a strong working relationship with agencies to coordinate timely on-site inspection for the UST removal.  We frequently completed the permitting and agency coordination within 1 to 2 business days to expedite the tank removal at the sites.
